Rupert ‘Zulu’

Zulu Warrior - Rupert 'Zulu' - Rider ProfileZulu Warrior

Cycling name?

Zulu. I think it’s because I like riding in the heat.

Why do you ride your bike?
Pushing my limits and escaping the grind.
Favourite place to ride?

Somewhere warm and sunny, Majorca, South Africa and England on a lovely summers day.

Switchbacks galore

Up or down mountains?

Down, but working hard on getting up.

Favourite climb?

Chapman’s Peak, Cape Town.  Not particularly long, steep, nor technical, but absolutely stunning.

What song/tune/music goes through your head while riding?

You think I can multitask?

Best moments?

All of those training rides coming together for one big ride and enjoying every bit of it.

Big roads, big mountains

How long does it take you to change a flat?

I’m guessing 5 minutes but fortunately I’ve not had a puncture this year (touching wood)

Advice to a new cyclist.
Push yourself a little harder and further each time.

Grand tours or Classics.

Grand Tours.

Gels or potatoes?

Gels. In moderation.

Headwind or rain?

Rain, headwinds are just depressing and make all ones effort seem worthless.

I wish I had been told that…
I’m in this for life.

Mountain Goat

What is it like being a Baroudeur?

I have to ride to my absolute limit to have any hope of keeping up but there’s great club atmosphere to keep you going.

Advice to someone wanting to join the Baroudeurs:

Ride as regularly and as often as you can and make sure after the long rides you book plenty of rest time to recover.

Where do you want to take your cycling?

Ride stronger.  Go faster.  Have fun.
